About the Book and Why we Wrote it
Voted one of 12 most notable children’s books of 2013 by Shelf Unbound.
The hugs in our book are exciting, fun, warm and friendly. They will help children make friends and bring families together, and have many physical and emotional benefits. One hug can last a lifetime.
The verses are short & simple, the illustrations bright and vibrant, children will naturally be drawn to them.
This is not just a book, it is a way of life and helping children all over the world, one hug at a time.
Hugging is a universal language and in the eyes of a child can say so many things – you’re my friend, you care about me, you love me, or simply thank you.
Mother and daughter have worked together to write these 12 action hugs, many of which were enjoyed when Melissa was a child, and now she is a mother herself we are having a fun time doing them again.
Benefits of a Hug
- A 20 second hug help release oxytocin in the body which is the body’s natural antidepressant and anti-anxiety chemical for both hug-ee and hug-er. So if you want to feel better – give someone a hug.
- Hugging boosts self-esteem. From the time we’re born touch shows us that we’re loved and special. The associations of self-worth and tactile sensations from our early years are imbedded in our nervous system as adults. The cuddles we received while growing up remain imprinted at a cellular level. In short – hugs are good for the soul.
- Hugs teach us how to give and receive and you can’t give a hug without receiving one! So hugs show us that love & joy flows both ways in that one simple gesture.
- Hugs help you to let go and be present in the moment, both giving and receiving a hug helps you move from your mind to your heart.
Debby & Melissa are mother and daughter and live in New Zealand. Debby is originally from the UK and Melissa was born in Holland.
Debby comes from a very large family of 10 children with many nephews and nieces, and grew up surrounded by children, so is used to story telling. Melissa was the 20th grandchild in the family.
The idea for this book comes from the action hugs that were made up when Melissa was small, now that she has a child of her own to whom this book is dedicated to, Jaxon, we are enjoying these hugs again and thought that we would like to share these with the world.
We are currently working on My Favorite Hugs Too to be released 2014 and are also planning a calendar to also be released sometime 2014.
Su works in accounts during the day and pursues her creative calling during the evenings (and sometimes into the wee hours of the morning). She studied art and graphics back in school but is mostly a self-taught artist. She strives to capture moods in her artwork and finds great joy when her audience connects with it. Her preferred mediums are digital, pencils, and paints, and her style is varied.
This will be Su’s first time illustrating a book. She would like to one day write and illustrate her own picture books.
